Liebherr Group
Strategically Selecting Saline for Worldwide Success
Liebherr Group operates over 130 equipment manufacturing companies, employing over 41,000 people, around the world. Established in 1949 by Hans Liebherr, the Switzerland-based company remains entirely owned by the Liebherr family today. Equipment manufactured by Liebherr companies is used on land, at sea, in the air, and in space. Technical innovation applied in both useful and user-friendly ways is the hallmark of Liebherr-manufactured products.
Liebherr Group is organized into decentralized companies of manageable size, operating independently. This is to ensure proximity to the customer and the ability to respond flexibly to market shifts in global competition. Liebherr Group operates three businesses in Saline:
- Liebherr-Aerospace Saline produces air management, actuation systems, landing gear, and hydraulic systems.
- Liebherr Gear Technology produces gear cutting machines and gear cutting tools.
- Liebherr Automation Systems produces material handling systems, transportation systems, magazine systems, and production systems.
Alex Vlielander, president of Liebherr Gear Technology, tells why they Saline works so well as their global headquarters:
“When Liebherr evaluates places to set up long-term facilities, we consider multiple parameters: skilled, productive, and available employees; opportunities for physical expansion; a pro-business local government; and an infrastructure conducive for a good quality of life. When Liebherr decided to move here in the 1980s, Saline met all these strategic points.”
