Saline's Sister Cities
President Dwight Eisenhower created the People–to-People initiative in 1956 that led to the formation of Sister Cities International organization. American cities were asked to partner with other communities around the world to bring people together directly and form personal bonds that would transcend world politics. Sister City organizations directly link communities around the globe. Formal agreements between over 1000 U.S. cities and more than 1,500 foreign communities have formed strong affiliations that support the free exchange of ideas and goodwill.
Saline has two sister cities, the first being one of the oldest active partnerships in the history of the Sister Cities International organization with Brecon, Wales, established in 1966.
In 1989 volunteers of the community joined together to establish the Saline-Brecon Friendship Guild Ltd. with the mission of promoting our sister city relationship to the Saline community and to provide a focus for the necessary fund-raising activities needed to continue and expand our 25-year association and friendship with Brecon, Wales. To celebrate this partnership the Saline Celtic Festival is held every year in honor of the growing relationship between Saline, Michigan and Brecon, Wales.
The second sister city partnership began in 2001 with Lindenberg, Germany.
