In Downtown Saline, a Home Befitting a Technology Leader

Among the increasing number of young and growing high-tech firms choosing Saline as their home, in2being continues to stand out.

From their Downtown Saline offices, the seven-person in2being team works with clients to help create new and innovative medical devices. Services from in2being include medical device development, prototyping, and program management. The company especially helps clients navigate the stiff development and regulatory demands of the medical device industry.

Gene Parunak, in2being’s CEO, founded the company in his home in 2010. After a brief stint in shared office space, in2being’s steady growth called for finding true office space in 2012. “We first considered Ann Arbor,” Parunak says, “but we were concerned about traffic and cost.”

The in2being team found the right fit in an upstairs suite at Saline’s historic Murphy’s Crossing buildings, home to an eclectic mix of restaurants, shops, professional services, and tech firms.

Murphy’s Crossing occupies the full southeast section of Downtown Saline’s famed “four corners.” The buildings had been beautifully restored some 20 years before by Phoenix Contractors of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Bill Kinley and his son Tyler Kinley, of a Phoenix offshoot company, continue to manage the Murphy’s Crossing buildings today.

Over the past few years, the in2being team has seen Downtown Saline grow even more attractive as their office location. “There’s now a very good set of restaurants here,” Parunak says. “Mac’s, Dan’s, Brecon Grille, Salt Springs Brewery, Benny’s, City Limits, Saline Inn, and more … We can walk to everything.” So when it came time for in2being to find another new office late in 2017, the staff agreed unanimously to stay in Saline.

By then, however, Murphy’s Crossing had become completely filled. Yet in2being still wished to work with Phoenix. “Bill Kinley, Tyler Kinley, and the whole Phoenix crew – they’re absolutely terrific,” says Parunak.

The right space turned up in Downtown Saline’s Merchant Square complex, another Phoenix property, just across Michigan Avenue from Murphy’s Crossing.

The new suite is tucked into a back section of Merchant Square. Since this corner of the complex had most recently housed a small barbecue restaurant, it took some vision to reimagine it as in2being’s new home. The Kinleys beautifully re-outfitted the space in ways completely befitting a technology leader. The in2being team moved into their new Saline home early in 2018.
