Trees Located in the Extension Between the Sidewalk and the Street
The City of Saline is responsible for the trees located between the sidewalk and the street (in the extension). If a tree located in the extension needs to be trimmed or appears to be dead or diseased, please contact the Department of Public Works (DPW) at 429-5624 ext. 2613.
When problems with trees located in the extension are reported to DPW, a work order is generated for someone to visit the site and determine the appropriate course of action. If the tree is dead or diseased, a tree removal permit is generated to begin the process of having the tree removed. Once the permit is approved, the tree is added to a list of trees to be removed. Depending on the size of the tree, it may require that the stump also be removed after the tree is cut down. Once the tree and the stump are removed, we will restore the turf until another tree can be planted, if it is determined that the tree will be replaced.
If it is determined that the tree should be replaced, we will place the address on a tree planting list to be planted at a future date. If City Council allocates funding for tree planting, we bid out the list of trees to be planted and a vendor is chosen. Miss Dig is notified so the area can be staked for utilities prior to planting. We will place a wooden stake in the location where the new tree is to be planted.
The emerald ash borer (EAB) is a destructive Asian beetle that has caused the death of millions of ash trees in Southeastern Michigan, Ohio, and Windsor, Ontario. Due to the high volume of street and park trees dying from EAB in such a short period of time, we have not been able to keep up with timely removals of infested trees. We have been successful in obtaining tree planting grants the past three years, however, we will defer future plantings depending on available funding.
The entire process takes a considerable amount of time because we have many trees located throughout the City in lawn extensions, parks, parking lots, and boulevards. We appreciate your patience and understanding of the process.
